Wirral schoolgirl crowned Young Sports Person of the Year at sports awards

Year 10 student, Letitia McKee, from St John Plessington Catholic College, was awarded during the ceremony which took place at the Floral Pavilion.

The awards, which celebrated its 60th anniversary this year, recognise the achievements of Wirral’s dedicated sportspeople and are open to anybody who lives in Wirral.

The Young Sports Person of the Year award, sponsored by Liverpool ONE, celebrates the outstanding achievements of young people who showcase passion, commitment and talent in their sport. 

Letitia scooped the esteemed award despite facing some tough competition from fellow young athletes. 

Letitia said: “Winning the Wirral Young Sportsperson of the Year is a special award. It shows that my hard work and determination has been acknowledges and recognised by others that are not just my family and coaches. 

“There were so many other strong candidates in the category to, so I was really proud of myself for coming away with the award.”

Letitia trains at Birkenhead Venture Boxing Club and is currently the reigning European school girl boxing champion. 

The PE department at St John Plessington nominated Letitia for the award after witnessing her incredible achievements, including her three-time national schoolgirl accolades in boxing. 

Letitia is also currently ranked number one in the world for her weight category.

Headteacher at St John Plessington Catholic College, Mr Peadar McLoughlin, said: “We are incredibly proud of Letitia on being named Wirral Young Sportsperson of the Year at the Wirral Sports Awards. 

“Letitia’s passion and determination shine through and is evident in the many accolades she has acquired including local and national titles. Letitia is a shining example of what hard work, dedication and passion can do. 

“From everyone at St John Plessington, we want to congratulate Letitia on this outstanding achievement.”
