Work has begun on a new cricket pitch as part of a project to improve sports facilities in a Leicestershire village.

The pitch at Seaton Road will be used by Mountsorrel Castle Cricket Club from the summer of 2026, Charnwood Borough Council said.

A new pavilion will also be built at the ground as part of the project by Mountsorrel Parish Council.

New football pitches will also be created to the side of the cricket pitch that Mountsorrel Football Club’s senior and junior teams will be able to use for their home matches.

Ross Willmott, manager at Mountsorrel Parish Council, said: “The cricket pitch will become a great hub for the community to come together at a modern sporting facility.

“The UK Shared Prosperity Fund has given us vital funding to go towards this project which will benefit the people of Mountsorrel and the surrounding areas for many years to come.”

The project has received from £250,000 the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Charnwood Borough Council was allocated £4m from the fund, which has been put towards 10 projects, such as the redevelopment of a scout hut and regenerating Shepshed’s Market Place.
